The wind is usually the last thing that happens, not the reason. Most trees that come down here were already failing at the base, in the roots or in old damage nobody could see from the ground. Heavy rain saturates the soil, a squall arrives, and a tree that was holding on stops holding on.
- Green crowns fall over. Healthy leaves say nothing about the roots.
- Rain does the damage before the wind does. Wet soil grips less.
- Roots fail more often than trunks. Especially where the soil is confined.
- Most failures were visible in advance. At the base, if anyone looked.
Every storm brings the same conversation. The tree looked fine. It usually did.
Why do trees fall in Singapore?
Because something was already wrong, and the weather found it.
Watch the order of events in a bad afternoon. Rain comes first and it comes hard. The soil takes it, gets heavy and loses grip around the roots. The crown takes it too, and a wet crown carries a great deal more weight than a dry one. Then the squall wind arrives and pushes on a bigger, heavier sail anchored in softer ground.
A sound tree in open ground handles that. What comes down is normally a tree with a compromised root plate, decay at the base, or a crown made top heavy by earlier cutting. The wind is the test, not the cause.
That is why failures cluster in the same weather but not in the same trees. The weather is shared. The weakness is not.
What is going on at the base of the tree?
This is the part almost nobody inspects and the part that decides most outcomes.
Look at where the trunk meets the ground. A healthy tree flares outwards there, widening into the soil like a foot. If the trunk goes into the ground straight, like a pole into a hole, something is wrong. Usually the flare is buried under soil or mulch piled against it, and buried bark stays wet and rots.
Then look for the other signs in that zone. Fungus growing out of the trunk or the soil beside it. Bark that sounds hollow or comes away. A crack. Soil lifted or cracked on one side, which means the root plate has already started to move.
Any of those is worth a call the same week. The last one is worth a call the same day.
Why do roots fail more often here?
Because there is usually less soil than the tree needs, and what there is gets compacted.
Roots are shallower and wider than people picture. Most of the structural ones sit in the top layer of soil and spread well beyond the crown. That plate is the anchor, and it works by being broad rather than deep.
On a developed site the plate rarely gets to be broad. There is a wall on one side, a driveway on another, a service trench cut through it a few years ago, and traffic compacting the ground over the rest. Roots that were cut never regrow into the space they lost.
This is the damage people cause themselves, and it is the one that cannot be undone. Ask before digging inside the root zone, not afterwards.
Which trees are most likely to come down?
Four kinds, and none of them is about the species alone.
- Fast growers with soft wood. Height gained quickly is not held strongly. They get large and top heavy before anyone thinks of them as big trees.
- Trees that were topped. A tree cut off at a convenient height responds with dense shoots attached only to the outside of the old wound. See pollarding and crown reduction.
- Trees whose roots were cut. Paving, trenching or a new wall on one side removes the anchorage on that side permanently.
- Trees newly exposed. A tree that grew up in a group and is left standing alone after the others go has never been wind loaded and is not built for it.
Age on its own is not a risk factor. A well rooted old tree is often the safest thing on the site.
Can you tell before it happens?
Usually, yes. Most failures announce themselves for months and get missed because everybody is looking at the leaves.
Walk the tree once a year and check these.
- The base. Flare visible, no fungus, no soft or hollow bark, no cracks.
- The ground around it. Flat and undisturbed, not lifted on one side.
- The trunk. No long vertical splits, no cavity, no sap running from a wound.
- The unions. Where two big stems meet, a tight V with bark trapped inside it is weaker than a wide U.
- The crown. Deadwood, or one side much heavier than the other.
A tree with none of these is very likely fine. A tree with two or three is worth an arborist looking at properly rather than a homeowner deciding.
What should you do about a tree you are worried about?
Keep people and cars away from it and from what is under it, then get it looked at. If the ground beside it has lifted or the tree has moved, treat it as urgent and call rather than message.
For anything less immediate, two photographs are usually enough to assess it. One of the whole tree from far enough back, and one of the base. A tree on public land is reported to the authorities rather than cut privately.
The cheapest thing you can do is the yearly walk. After that, protect the roots and keep the crown in proportion, because regular light work avoids the heavy cut that leaves a tree weaker than it found it. What that looks like is in how often trees need cutting back.
